DESCRIPTION
Speaker provided by MacuHealth, LLC

In this course, the audience will learn about the many beneficial effects of the macular carotenoids lutein (L), zeaxanthin (Z), and meso-zeaxanthin (MZ). For context, a brief history of the study of macular carotenoids will be presented. This will be followed by an illustration of how these carotenoids act as potent antioxidants and anti-inflammatories systemically and in specialized tissues such as the retina and brain to support general health and wellbeing. Several functional enhancement effects determined in studies of L, Z, and MZ supplementation, such as significantly improved cognition in otherwise healthy individuals, reduced blood cortisol and psychological stress, and reduced ocular fatigue and strain, will be covered. Lastly, a perspective on targeted nutrition and the benefits to general health and healthy aging will be offered and supported with peer-reviewed data. Strategies for implementation of L, Z, and MZ supplementation into practice will also be discussed.
